How to Get Rid of Jowls

One of the most prominent signs of aging can begin with loose, sagging skin that forms along the jawline and neck, known as “jowls.” This condition occurs over time as skin naturally loses elasticity, collagen, and muscle tone, and as facial tissues begin to weaken. Although there are several additional factors that may contribute to this aesthetic concern—such as overexposure to the sun, weight fluctuations, smoking, and other lifestyle choices—genetics can play a significant role, often leaving both women and men feeling helpless and frustrated with their appearance.

Fortunately, cosmetic procedures are available to tighten, lift, and restore more youthful-looking facial and neck contours. Continue reading below to learn about surgical approaches for reducing the appearance of jowls from our board-certified plastic surgeon, Amie Miller, MD.

Facelift

While different degrees of jowls can be addressed with various aesthetic treatments, facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) is considered the gold standard for addressing the effects of moderate to severe jowls. Designed to be an effective and long-lasting solution, a facelift procedure can strategically restructure tissues in the lower facial area by tightening underlying facial musculature and loose, inelastic skin for a smoother, firmer result while maintaining the natural characteristics of the patient’s face. This concentrated approach works well for jowls and the formation of excess skin around the jawline by redefining the contours and reversing signs of aging. Many facelift patients also report an improved sense of self-confidence after the procedure, with a noticeably refreshed appearance.

Facelift/Neck Lift

For certain candidates, combining neck lift surgery (lower rhytidectomy) may be a more comprehensive solution, as the procedure can focus on removing the excess fat and inelastic skin in the lower face that creates jowls in addition to loose skin and muscle banding on the neck area. In many cases, some degree of neck lifting is typically included in a facelift procedure, but a standalone neck lift may be performed if found to be more beneficial for the patient’s unique circumstances.

The best way to determine whether cosmetic surgery, or an alternative approach, is best for reducing the appearance of jowls is to have a consultation with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Amie Miller, who can evaluate your skin quality, anatomy, aesthetic goals, and other factors to create a personalized treatment plan under the highest safety and patient care standards.
