An abdominoplasty procedure, commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck,” surgically removes excess tissue in the abdominal region, tightens and repairs the underlying musculature, and redrapes the remaining tissue to create a firmer, flatter abdomen. This treatment is one of the most popular surgical body contouring options among both women and men, and has helped many individuals renew their appearance and feel great about the way they look. Our plastic surgeon, Amie Miller, MD, is extensively trained and experienced with tummy tuck surgery and customizes all treatment plans to each patient’s unique needs and goals.

What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?
Tummy tuck surgery offers a range of benefits for patients who would like to address excess tissue and fat collection in the abdomen that is stubbornly resistant to traditional diet and exercise routines. The potential advantages of this procedure include:
- Reduction of excess skin and fat in the abdominal region
- Tightening/repairing of abdominal muscles that have become stretched or torn over time or due to pregnancy
- Tightening of abdominal skin to create a slimmer and smoother abdomen
- Improved fit for desired clothing
An abdominoplasty can be very effective on its own, or it can be combined with other procedures for a more comprehensive rejuvenation. Tummy tuck surgery can also be added to a Mommy Makeover for women who are looking to restore their appearance after pregnancy.
What Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Involve?
A full tummy tuck procedure requires general anesthesia; however, this treatment is typically performed on an outpatient basis without the need for an overnight hospital stay. The procedure begins with a hip-to-hip incision in the lower area of the abdomen, just above the pubic region, and a small, separate incision around the belly button. She will then repair and tighten the abdominal muscles, trim away excess skin, and possibly remove excess fat via liposuction. The remaining skin will be pulled taut and the navel repositioned. Residual scarring from tummy tuck surgery can often be well-concealed under clothing (even swimwear).
In cases where the primary cause of the aesthetic concern in the abdomen is excess fat, liposuction may be all that is necessary to achieve the patient’s goals. Dr. Miller can make this determination upon evaluation.
What Can I Expect During Tummy Tuck Recovery?
Most patients should expect about two weeks of recovery after tummy tuck surgery before returning to work and other normal routines. Swelling and bruising in the treatment area should diminish as the abdomen heals, and discomfort can be managed with medication. Other than regular light walks as recommended by Dr. Miller to keep the blood flowing, patients should be careful to avoid any activities that may cause abdominal strain for a minimum of six weeks following the abdominoplasty procedure.
